To all those wonderers out there, i am an Operation support specialist. what da heck that means? I support operations, which means that i am an engineer cough cough "poorly paid engineer" that handles a very specialised services. what do i do???? BACKUPS!
wait........ a.............. sec............ backups????
backups?! isn't that like a simple thing? all you have to do is just copy the data you want to protect unto another medium or drive or place and tadaaaaa... you have a backup.
You are all SOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong!. including myself....
First and foremost, you will not have the time to do backups or copy data with such simple steps when you have 1400++ servers / clients to backup all over the world. wow! 1400++ servers. "cursings" Most of these servers are relics. Darn NT servers. You could be backing up data from one server say in Russia and you'll find out that the data is going to Belgium! thats not backup.. this is playing with SAN already. SAN = Storage Area Networks. Its a well... lets just say that its much more bloody interesting than my previous work.
One thing i have to admit.. its much more complicated than it looks. I never knew that backups would comprise of a lot of things. From media handling of tapes like LTO1, LTO2 and LTO3 tapes that has a capacity of up too 800GB, MSSQL backups, Exchange backups, ORACLEs ... Filesystem. Maaaaaan...... do i have a lot to learn. Argh..... backups failed again..
will blog another day.
